Training of school teachers and librarians in Bolgatanga
To get the best out of the library, people involved in
and responsible for the library will be trained by the director of
Biblionef Ghana, who is a trained librarian herself. The training has been
developed by Biblionef Ghana together with Wia Huisman-Smeenk, a trained
Dutch librarian specialized in reading promotion and information
literacy. She is member of the Lions Club Slochteren Skiramere.
Content of the training:
- how to deal with books, both in the classroom as in the library;
- how does a library system work;
- how to keep the books clean, tidy and usable for many years;
- how to read with and for children in a way that will keep the child's
Attention focused;
- how to teach specific lessons to children to get used to work with the library and their books
- how to use and encourage usage of the library during school hours.They will learn:
- how to incorporate activities with books in their teaching plans and how to install a love of reading in the children
- how to transfer the knowledge of the training to other teachers and/ or librarians of the participating schools.
By training the teachers we aim a change in the perspective that children have towards reading, by motivating the children to read and get all the described benefits from it. Our goal is that the persons trained (2 per school) will give and organize the training at their schools in the future. This way, the sustainability of the libraries they manage and the increment of literacy levels of the children is best ensured.

Here are some new pictures of building the library in Okorase. This one of the Learning Community Spaces from our LCIF project. The LCS will have a regional reach and will be a model library, how to make it sustainable and how to motivate children to read.
